Frequently asked questions

How much does home care cost?

It depends on the care needed, the length and timing of visits and whether care is overnight or live-in. See typical market ranges in our guide to paying for home care. After a free assessment we give you a clear written quote before care starts.

How can I pay for care?

There are four main routes: paying privately (self-funding), council-funded care after a needs assessment, a direct payment or personal budget from your council, and NHS Continuing Healthcare where needs are mainly health needs. Many people combine routes.

Can I pay for care myself without a council assessment?

Yes. Self-funders can arrange care directly with a provider and choose the times and the carer. A council needs assessment is still free, and can help you plan.

How do I get a council needs assessment?

Contact your local council's adult social care team and ask for a needs assessment. It is free. If you are eligible, a financial assessment then decides what you pay. You can start at GOV.UK.

What is a direct payment?

The council pays you the money for your care instead of arranging it. You choose your provider, including us, and pay for the care from that budget.

What is NHS Continuing Healthcare?

NHS-funded care for adults with a primary health need, after an NHS assessment. See NHS guidance on Continuing Healthcare.

Can benefits help pay for care?

Some people can claim Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence Payment. Rules and amounts change, so check GOV.UK or ask Age UK or your council for independent advice.

What is live-in care?

A carer lives in your home and provides support through the day, with agreed breaks. It suits people who want to stay at home with regular help and company.

What is the difference between home care and live-in care?

Home care is visits of agreed length at agreed times. Live-in care is continuous support from a carer who stays in the home. Our guide to live-in care or a care home compares the options.

Are your carers checked and is the company regulated?

Staff go through identity, right-to-work, enhanced DBS and reference checks and training. UK Instant Services Ltd is registered with the Care Quality Commission for personal care (CQC profile).

How quickly can care start?

Often within days after the assessment, depending on the hours and where you live. Call 0333 014 4084 and we will tell you what is possible.

How do I make a complaint?
